Can You Guess Which Texas City Has the Most Fortune 500 Companies?

The Houston area is perhaps most well known for industries related to energy, oil, and natural gas, as well as aeronautics and biomedical research. These industries have contributed to the city’s thriving economic base through the years, and international trade has further increased Houston’s reputation as an excellent place for establishing and operating a business. Forbes magazine has listed Houston as one of the Best Places for Business and Careers several times in the last 10 years.

In its ranking of the Fortune 500 companies in 2014, Fortune magazine noted 52 Texas firms present on the annual list, with half of them based in Houston. These companies are:

In the top ten, Phillips 66 ranked No. 6, with revenues of $161.18 billion.

All of the Houston companies on the list are in the business of energy, with the exception of three companies: Sysco Corp at No. 63, Waste Management at No. 207, and Group 1 Automotive at No. 307.

The biggest movers from the previous rankings were Enterprise Products Partners moving up from No. 64 to No. 56; Plains GP Holdings, up from No. 77 to No. 70; and Kinder Morgan, from No. 265 to No. 206.

Newcomers to the list include Buckeye Partners at No. 485 and Noble Energy at No. 491.

With these 26 companies, Houston now ranks third among the cities with the most number of Fortune 500 companies, only behind second placer Chicago, which has 30 companies, and top placer New York City, which has 72 companies.
